About our food

We are delighted to offer you this delicious and special cake. Smörgåstårta is a beautiful, classic and very popular Swedish dish, often served at special occasions such as birthdays, confirmations, graduations and weddings. But not only is it for special occasions, it is also perfect for luncheons, gatherings, meetings and functions.

It is made up of several layers of bread with creamy delicious fillings that vary from prawns and smoked salmon to ham, roast beef, pate, cheese, egg as well as vegetarian options, and topped with vegetable decorations reflecting the ingredients in the filling.

The Smörgåstårta is a clever hybrid between a cake and a smorgasbord, and incorporates the Swedish principle of letting everyone have a share. The toppings are evenly and fairly distributed over the cake, in a beautiful and decorative pattern. Because of it's large amount of filling and decorations it resembles a layered cream cake with garnished top, that is served cold and sliced like a dessert cake.

The concept is said to have been first inspired by the Danish Smorrebrod and culture, and is said to have been around since the 1950's. Gunnar Sjodahl from Wedermarks Bakery in northern Sweden has the honour of being described as the inventor of the cake in 1961, and it became very popular in the 70's as a dish used for parties and special occasions.
